TV Troubleshooting

Common SD (Standard Definition) Errors

  • Black, Blue, Green, White Screen
  • Frozen TV Screen
  • Fuzzy Screen
  • Ghosting
  • Hum Bar
  • Rolling & Distorted
  • Snowy Screen

Try this:

  1. Make sure:
    • Your equipment (TV and cable) is properly connected. 
    • The coaxial cable is connected to the outlet wall.
    • Your TV is on the correct source or input (i.e. Video 1, HDMI).
  2. Refresh your receiver.
  3. Unplug your receiver, wait at least60 seconds, and plug it back in. 

Note: If you have any other equipment (gaming console or DVD player), make sure it’s turned off.

Common HDTV (High Definition TV) Errors

Try this:

  1. Change the settings on your guide.
  2. Follow the steps from above.

Other Common Errors

Audio Out of Sync

  1. Make sure your TV’s SAP (secondary audio programming) is set to Stereo on your TV. 
  2. Make sure the SAP feature is turned off on your Spectrum receiver. 

Note: Refer to TV’s manual for more info.

Audio “Skips” and is Inconsistent

Check the settings of your receiver:

  1. Go the Main Menu on your guide
  2. Select Setup.
  3. Select Audio Setup and set the output to Optimal Stereo.
  4. Reboot your receiver by unplugging and plugging it back in. (Allow at least 60 seconds before plugging it back in.) 


No Sound

  1. Make sure your TV and receiver aren’t muted.
  2. Adjust the volume on your remote.
  3. The output on your TV should be set to stereo or surround sound.
  4. Unplug your receiver, wait at least60 seconds, and plug it back in.


  • Motorola receivers should be set to Optimal Stereo.
  • Scientific Atlanta receivers should be set to HDMI.
