SB6141 dropping connection randomly

I'm having issues with internet connection dropping randomly. After a connection drop, all the blue lights on the cable modem will turn off and then cycle through green lights before turning blue again and then reinstating the connection. I believe there is an issue with Spectrum, but I do not know how to read the logs from my SB6141. Could you help decipher this info to see if I need to get a tech from Spectrum out to my place? Thank you for your help in advance, I appreciate it.

Re: SB6141 dropping connection randomly

The first thing to jump out to me are the high upstream power levels. At 51 dBmV the modem is having to scream to be heard. It's best to be in the 40-47 range.

Can you describe your connection path from the tap at the pole or pedestal to the modem as best you can (splitters, length of coax runs, wall outlets, etc)?  House or apartment?

Re: SB6141 dropping connection randomly

I live in a large apartment complex (~100 units) so it's really difficult to say how everything is setup. There is only one coax wall outlet in my unit, and from there I'm not sure how things are setup. I do see a LOT of people's cable/internet coax lines about 75ft away in the trash chute room, but I'm unsure how everything is wired between my unit and the cables in the trash room.

Agree with the previous poster. Your upstream numbers are right against the high end for that modem. It will be hard for you personally to figure out what is happening in a large apartment building like you are in. The only option you probably have is to try to get a Spectrum tech out there to troubleshoot and hope they spot something.

Re: SB6141 dropping connection randomly

YIKES!

What is that... a 20 foot cable for a 30 inch run from the wall to the modem?

Sure, it is likely RG6 so the loss is minimal... but for heavens sake, use a more appropriate length of cable so you don't have all that coiling and unnecessary signal loss. Already have an uphill battle with cabling because it is an apartment building, don't need to add to it unnecessarily.

Re: SB6141 dropping connection randomly

Agreed...replace that extra long coax to the modem. If you can lower the upstream power levels even .5 dBmV it might make all the difference.

Re: SB6141 dropping connection randomly

Having multiple winds in your cable like that creates an electromagnetic coil, causing interference

Unwind it and don't use zip-ties

Replace it with the right size cable (I've always asked the tech for the size I need and they've always just fabricated one on the spot)
