Intermittent Reboots T3/T4 Timeouts Technicolor Modem

I have been experiencing repeated reboots of my cable modem for weeks. I will provide as detailed information as I can and thank you for your help.

I had my cable modem replaced by Spectrum about a month ago. It's the following:

HW Version: 1.1
Vendor: Technicolor
BOOT Version: 4.0.7_Technicolor
Core Version: 01.EF.04.32.00
Model: TC8715D
Product Type: Technicolor DOCSIS 3.0 advanced cable gateway
Flash Part: 128 MB
Download Version: 01.EF.04.32.00

I previously had a Ubee modem with similar problems. It will unexpectedly and randomly reboot throughout the day and night and service will be interrupted for 1-3 minutes. This happens 3-10 times a day at least. Connections are tight with no splitters used in the house. The modem is connected to a coax wallplate. In fact I have two active wallplates side-by-side and have tried both with one being worse than the other. I have a total of five coax wallplates in my house in different rooms. Two of them are unused with no terminators connected. I have one cable box and one DTA along with the cable modem. The main cable box is connected to my living room wallplate and there is a power inserter model Antronix ARPI-2000 located there. The last tech said that powers a splitter of sorts located in the gray box on the back of my house which I cannot see. He said all 5 connections are now linked and I must keep that inserter plugged in for service. Seems to work OK except for the incessant modem reboots. The problem is actually worse now than when I had the Ubee modem and no power inserter.

I have disabled WSP and locked 2.4GHz to channel 3 and that has eliminated error messages relating to the Wifi but has not stopped the rebooting. The DS/US channels are always locked and power levels always seem in spec when I check them. Corrected and uncorrected errors are steadily on the rise. Here is the log for the last three days.

Re: Intermittent Reboots T3/T4 Timeouts Technicolor Modem

pop open the outside box and get the amplified splitter model number. I'll bet it's an 8 port with a bunch of unterminated ports, A photo will help.  I've seen them install EMTA bypass amps with the emta port empty and the modem on a tv port.... if this is a 0 loss bidirectional amp, there's a huge upstream issue.  Sorry but Their techs are numbskulls, all ports must be terminated, period! That includes the 2 empty ones in your house, I'd also make sure all connectors on the backside of wall plates are terminated.

Which line is the antronics power inserter installed in?  it could be on tv port 1 or the emta port if they used it. If you unplug the power inserters wall wort, does the modem die?  if not, the modem is on the EMTA bypass port and less susceptible to inhouse open ports.

This isn't a modem issue, it's coaxial, maybe down the street. Did they replace the outside line,  pole connectors, or the grounding block?

For 3 devices you shouldn't need an amplifier anywhere .  Modem goes on the first 2 way splitter, the other port gets split 2 ways again to feed the cable boxes.

Your upstream is too high and is why I need the FULL amp model #

On the main cable box that has the antronics on it's line, hold in the select button for 10 seconds and hit the up arrow. What is the IB freq and dB level , what is the OOB tx freq and level (oob tx freq is probably around 17 mHz)  .

DTA's aren't much help as they have no US tx in them....

Incoming DS signal level appear to be OK, but the Upstream path has a problem.  The high and still growing number of errors on every DS channel suggest that your coaxial cabling has loose or corroded cable connectors, a broken shield., or unterminated cable ports, and you have comfirmed this.

Your modem must ALWAYS be either connect directly to, or be on the first 2-port splitter after the service drop line.  NEVER connect the modem through an amplified splitter.

It sounds like the amplifier's power unit is incorrectly installed and the amplifier itself may be the wrong model foryour application.  All cabling MUST be RG-6U, not the much older RG59 type; crimped or molded connectors are not acceptable.  New type F compresssion fittings are necessary for digital signals, to keep out external interference.

Also know that your DTA will have to be replaced with a full set-top converter when Spectrum converts to full video encryption on your local cable network.  You'll get a notice in your monthly bill just before the change.

So to start isolating and  fixing your problems, first disconnect any unused "dead-end" cables and put 75 ohm terminations on the wall plates .

Next, buy a 2-port splitter and a short 12" jumper cable.  Connect the pole drop cable to the input of the new 2-port splitter, the cable feeding your modem to one output, and a short jumper cable between the second putput and the input of the existing amplifier unit.  This change provides a clean signal to your internet modem.

Third, send us the level and error/status report pages again and tell us if anything else has changed, like the modem stops dropping out, or your TV signals just got better.

Re: Intermittent Reboots T3/T4 Timeouts Technicolor Modem

All emta bypass port amps have a 3.5 dBloss 2 way splitter internal before the US/DS duplexer and amp modules and that is the port that should be used, problem is that the 0 dB lossbidirectional amps also make the US worst if the noise is coming in thru one or more of the 4 or 8 "tv" ports.

Since the amp made the problem worst, it's probably outside the house. I need to see what was replaced outside...  Also check what's on the backside of wall plates, the techs aren't very thorough... must also have a proper grounding block bonded to the electric/telco common ground point.... And what we've seen is that UG wiring is often in worst shape than overhead...

Re: Intermittent Reboots T3/T4 Timeouts Technicolor Modem

Thanks for responding. If I unplug the power inserter my Internet connection drops. I could not get into the diagnostics of my cable box. I have a Pace RNG150N box and UR5U-8790L-TWO remote. I pressed the OK/Sel button for 10 seconds and pushed the up arrow but it just changed channels. I tried several times. I took pictures to show the outside and power inserter. But I don't know how to post them? The model number outside is VRA500B. Is there a way for me to send you the pics?

Ok, how far are you from the street? Is this dense housing?

I'll bet there are F connectors on all but the amplifiers power port and not enough upstream gain to stick the modem on the VOIP port as it has 4 dB of loss and I know you're not on it now but on one of the 0dB amplified ports since it drops when amp power is lost. either the DTA or one of the 2 empty wall jacks are on the voip jack.

This is a typical case of untrained techs trying to fix bad levels by using an amplifier when the problem is out on the street... Woman Mad , this should have been escallated to the bucket truck guys.... do you remember if the tech made any measurements out at the pole before he decided to add the amplifier.

?

What I would do is pick up a 2 pack of 75 ohm F connector terminators and put them on the 2 wall jacks that are empty.... If this is overhead cablecan you get a photo of the line tap off on the pole?

You need to put the photo's up on Imgur and a link to them here so we can see them.

Re: Intermittent Reboots T3/T4 Timeouts Technicolor Modem

Karl, he already has a 4 port 0 dB loss bidirectional amp and is on the amplified port since the 5th port( EMTA bypas)internal splitter is too lossy and would push the upstream over +54 dBmv...  look up the VRA500B....  This is probably an issue before the amp, I need to see the photo's to see if connectors & grounding block  were replaced...

I've heard a rumor that the subcontractors get "penalized" if they send a problem off to the bucket truck contractor who finds "nothing wrong"

I'd put 75 ohm terminators on the 2 open wallplates and see if US/ DS levels change as one of them is on the EMTA port...  Hopeful;ly, I'll find a load of amps at the scrapyard to test and see what various unterminated ports do.... I know the 8 port amps do have issues with unterminated voip ports and actually had TWC stick a 2 way splitter in front of 2 of them rather than use the voip port to feed the second amplifier (sports bar with around 30 sets that they had all jacked up.... ) will get interesting when they kill off the analog and clear QAM, lol...

Re: Intermittent Reboots T3/T4 Timeouts Technicolor Modem

Thanks for the tip. Never used imgur before. It's an old neighborhood and not dense. The poles run through the backyards and the houses are typically 1/2 acre lots if that helps with the distance. And as I remember the tech did not check the pole tap or even the inside connectors. He just added the amplifier and changed my modem.

Re: Intermittent Reboots T3/T4 Timeouts Technicolor Modem

Based on the levels that @customer100 posted last time, I would still  move the internet modem over to the phone port and read both DS and US levels.  I think his US level will stay just under 51.  Then he can have up to 4 amp'd ports for TV set-top boxes.  Of course every wall plate should be term'd if there's no device connected to it, and same with any open ports on the amp itself.  Expecting to see the modem report DS avg across all 16 at +0.5 and the US at just about 50.8 dBmV.

Ok, the on house amp connectors are the new style and less than 5 years old.

They "wasted" a terminator on the amplifiers power port that doesn't need a terminator on it, lol.

The actual hardline tapoff is to the left of the pole, I see theres the neighbor to the left of you is connected, don't think you'll get a clear enough closeup of the tapoff though....

The power inserter and cable box is on port 1, the modem is on either port 2-3 or 4.

It's also unusual that they didn't use a grounding block but did use the amps ground screw..., I also don't like to see the electric mast pipe used as the ground, but at least it's not a painted or plastic one.  Is there a ground wire& rod below the meter?1hLbUB1
