High ping and packet loss on only one specific game.

Hello there. I play a game made by Blizzard called Diablo 3. For the past year or so I've been expierincing intoleratble lag spikes/packet loss while playing. I've tried calling customer support but the employees that answer the call seem clueless and just try to get me to do the standard power cycling etc. I posted my issue on the Blizzard forums (company that made Diablo 3) and they had me run a WinMTR test, which is a program that basically combines a ping and a traceroute into a single tool. After posting my results, they seemed to think it was a problem on the ISP side. I'll post the results below. One thing to add is this problem ONLY happens on this specific game. I play other games, stream movies/TV shows and have zero issues. Has to be some sort of routing issue right? Thanks for your time and help!

High spikes right after the CPE... may be some localized signal quality issues.

Post your signal levels and log so they can review them. They may show something that a normal tech can address directly.

Thanks, I'll post a screenshot of my signal levels below but after searching for awhile i couldn't find any way to view the log. Ubee dvw32cb,

Just checking to make sure you know that Blizzard Entertainment's gaming servers, addressed at 137.221.65.132 in the WinMTR run, are located in the Netherlands.  Certainly can be a IXP routing or congestion problem which is far outside of Spectrum's transport network and completely out of their control.

I'm no expert, but doesn't the high ping and packet loss start way before that?

Re: High ping and packet loss on only one specific game.

A couple downstream channels are showing an uncharacteristic dip in strength and SNR values. May be some issues with cables/splitter/etc. locally that is causing delays/drops/retransmits--could be tied to the occasional spikes just on the other side of your modem and headend.

Upstream levels are also uncharacteristically low... usually happens when an amp is in play. If there is noise ingress because of quality of cables/splitters (as hinted at by your downstream numbers), such amplification would also risk amplifying that noise and contributing to elevated error rates as well (which can trigger retransmits/drops on the upstream as well). Could also be an issue with that device as well (bad power circuitry can induce a "hum" in certain frequency ranges).

So yeah... there may actually be some more localized line/signalling quality issues that need to be investigated, in addition to making sure you are hitting more optimally located Blizzard servers (like TX, NY, IL, CA, etc... not somewhere in another country).

Issue resolved by a tech.
