CONSTANT DROP OUTS ON ARRIS SBG6580

i've had this modem for the last few months and it has never worked right. I bought it to replace the rental from TWC, which also had constant dropouts. I think it has to be somewhere upstream. The modem reboots and tries to reconnect 5-10 times a day. I have to unplug it and reboot it every time.  I live in a very large and very old apartment complex and want to get a tech out here to check it out. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

In the past 4 weeks you have continuously and intermittently (approx 5741 minutes of no service in 4 weeks, as of right now, 14% of the time) have had issues with your upstream communications.

 

In your case, it's not that the signal power levels are out of range that is causing those upstream signals to fail to lock on, but rather that you seem to have terrible noise (which is caused by ingress, caused by a leak somewhere) on your low-frequeuncies, particularly your upstream frequencies.  24.2 MHz for example is at a 21 SNR right now, which is critically low for being the delta between signal and noise.

 

It's highly unlikely it's an issue with the modem's demodulator, but rather very likely there's a bad coax fitting/connector (or more than one) somewhere, or some other line in your home which is backfeeding noise.

 

1. Do you have your modem direct to wire outside or does it connect to a coax wall plate?

2. Do you have splitters somewhere or is just the modem direct to the utility "drop"?

3. Does the drop (aerial from a telephone pole, or underground) look visibly damaged?

 

If you want some DIY tips, we can offer you some as a community, but it might be wisest to schedule an appointment for a field tech to come out on-site for "intermittent internet due to possible severe noise on the upstream channels".  It's not "constant", it's "intermittent" and "frequent".

 

If you do call it in to make an appointment (after troubleshooting with them), you can make it go smoother & faster for yourself and the tech by taking a few moments to make the coax wall outlets accessible (so they can be unscrewed and checked behind the wallplates) and familarize yourself with where your "point of demarcation" is, which is the main place you have splitters or an amp to take one service line and split it for more than one outlet in the home, condo, or apartment.

 

In apartments it can be hard to fix the issue if it's not inside the unit or out in the utility box, because of how many apartments are wired.  If the wiring between inside and outside is bad in an apartment, a post-wire request form has to be sent out and approved by your landlord, and the job is done by some contract group for your city who does this on TWC/Charter's behalf (or sometimes the landlord has their maintenance contractors do it).

I've seen a few penny-pinching landlords (or as I call them, "slumlords") that don't want to pay to get the wiring redone or put forth the effort, so if that's the case you're hosed, because we can't force them to do it.  Hopefully it's just a bad fitting on the ends, and not a total rewire.  But it's hard to tell without being there, and all I know right now is that it's highly likely it's a physical issue with a leak (ingress/egress) somewhere. 

  Thankfully post wires aren't usually needed, but sometimes they are.  Just to give you fair forewarning.

You are having the typical NYC DS noise issue and are also using an obsolete 8 channel modem which will not cover the bandspread there. 

 You are having an upstream signal issue and this needs TWC out to find and repair whatevers causing 3 dead upstream channels, a new modem won't fix that.
