TWC-Social Media Customer Care
Got the Romio installed with cable card and tunning adapter. This was the most painless install yet of a system with cable card. It seems TWC has gotten much better at it then before. Hopefully this system will be stable for a few years.
If you have digital cable you will want to get a cable card and tuning adaptor for your Tivo. The cable card will allow the Tivo to get access to digital channels in your subscription. The tuning adaptor will give your Tivo the ability to access switched digital video (SDV) channels which is how the majority of the HD channels are send out.
The TDC648250B is compatible with Time Warner. The issue is that this model is NOT compantible with M-Cards so if you want to recorde two shows at once, you will have to use two cards in it. I had this unit but decided to go back to my previous model, the TCD652160 becuase I could use a single M-card in that and recorde two shows at the same time.
OP only wants starter TV which doesn't run SDV qam.. TThe DTA's TWC is renting will only do the non SDV channels. That includes the starter and the standard TV Tiers...
The cablecard is needed to decode the encrypted QAM on the standard tv and higher tiers.
You will need both the CableCard and the Tuning Adapter. The CableCard provides the correct "Channel MAP" to the TiVo. The channel map tells the TiVo which frequencies to tune into to receive the channel. A lot of the channels, especially HD channels are on a Switched Digital Video (SDV) system. SDV works kind of like YouTube on the internet, the channels on SDV are not turned on all of the time, so when you tune to the channel, your cable box or TiVo has to send a request to the server at TWC to start transmitting the channel. Just like your computer sends a request to YouTube to start the video there. The Tuning Adapter handles sending this request for your TiVo. Since there is no additional charge for the Tuning Adapter, it doesn't make sense not to get it.
