So, I'm on either and Android tablet (Marshmallow) or a brand spanking new iPad 5th Gen, and the spectrum TV app (I'm at home on my home wifi network) tells me that iit is "We're Sorry, wer're unable to play channel AMD HD, please watch a different channel or try again later" or for FX HD, or many other channels.
What is up with this? The web version works OK, why not the iPad or Android Tablet version?

There was a known issue with the app. The issue has been resolved. If you are still having an issue after deleting and reinstalling the app, please let us know.
