Hi Dr. Stranger,

One problem is that if you do not rent a cable box, for example buy one, there is no guarentee that it will work with Spectrum's network.  There was an offer, don't know if it is still in effect that you could get a cable box from Spectrum for the first year for free if you had used a tuning adaptor and than after that pay the monthly rental fee for the box.

You will need to rent equipment to watch payTV programming once your market goes digital.  You cannot "buy" a cable box.

Your one option, and this will work if you are also an internet customer, is to buy a Roku and connect the Roku to your TV set.  The Spectrum Roku app will replace your cable box.

All progrmaming is going to be encrypted to prevent cable theft.  So you will need the cable company's equipment to view it.

Rent a CableCard from Spectrum ($2.00) and buy a used TiVo.

If you have a smart TV or XBox, check to see if you can download the Spectrum TV app; then you won't need a cable box.

You will still need at least one leased device on the account (set top box or CableCard) along with Spectrum internet.  The little advertised streaming package Spectrum Choice could also be an option using a Roku, Xbox One, or select Samsung smart tvs.

Is this still true, or maybe a better/related question, is it true in all areas?

I know a person that recently switched from TWC to SPP, returning the cable box they had with their TWC plan, and now they don't have any equipment, not even a cable card.

If you are not on a Streaming only subscription there is a requirement for at least one piece of video equipment leased from us.

If you are a streaming only customer you can use any of the supported platforms to access the Spectrum TV product and will not be required to lease any equipment from us.

You can visit Exclusive Spectrum Apps & Partner Apps to see all of the available apps/websites you have access to for both situations.  It also shows what platforms are supported.

I can live with having to lease a box accept your equipment is junk. I’ve had to replace my DVR at least 4 times in the last 2 years.
