For the past few days my DVR does not record some scheduled shows. When I check the manage log it says it didn’t record because the channel was unavailable. Is there a fix for this?
If you notice a pattern developing with the same shows and channels not recording, the first thing to do is to schedule a service call for a signal and drop line test. Avoid resetting any boxes, modems, or routers for six hours prior to your appointment because equipment resets will reset the signal error codes back to zero, and the tech needs to see those codes to determine signal quality.
You will need to tune to the channels that often are not recording when the tech is there for the signal reading. Make a note of those channels. The signal readings will assess the quality of your outside and inside lines. The tap on your drop should also be checked.
If your signals and lines are good, it is possible that the DVR may need to be replaced. Note that if you don't see a pattern of recording problems, it could be a SDV or switched digital video issue, where there sometimes is not enough bandwidth in an over-crowded node for the signal to be sent to the box at the right time. Not too much you can do about this issue if it is an SDV situation. In rare cases, the guide data may also change the title or remove a show. If that happens, you can also get the "Show Not Available" message.
I would also suggest checking the coaxial cable. Make sure it is tight on both the back of the box and the wall outlet or splitter if you have one. If you are using a splitter does it look
corroded or old? Does the coaxial have any severe bends or obvious damage?
How long have you had the DVR? When you are watching channels live do you ever
see the message that the channel is not available?

Had this happen to me a while ago. At first I thought it was because of the rebooting that occasionally happens. However, it happened when I was watching another channel. The screen said it was recording, but when I went to check later, it said it was unavailable. So I had a service guy come out. He said it has nothing to do with a signal, as it wouln't show it was recording otherwise. In layman terms, it's a glitch in the system. He said a new box might help, but he said it's not a new problem. If it happens a lot, I say get a new box. But for me, who dvr's a lot, it happens infrequently enough that I wouldn't want to go through the hassle.
