Unable to connect with Ethernet to Spectrum/TWC Modem

Wireless works.  Plugging in an Ethernet cable into a modem is not even recognized,  Modem/router combined equipment model # TC8717T.

We have been using this modem/router only for our telephone and had been using a Netgear router.  Now we are trying to get better cable speed with everything  going through the Spectrum/TWC modem/router.

It is not recognizing the Eternet cables are plugged in.  It has to be the modem since everthing works through the Netgear router.

Connect the ethernet cable to your netgear router! If you want to use the Spectrum supplied combo unit for routing it has to be enabled by Spectrum and will cost you $5.00 a month. Most experienced users here recommend using your own router as you have more control.  Unless your router is very old you should get full speed with an ethernet connection from your netgear router.

So when you say "wireless works" is that on the 8717 or your Netgear router? My first thought is that the 8717 is set up in bridged mode, which would mean only one ethernet port is active on the 8717 that would be used to connect to the router.

Thank you.  This helps.  We won't get the higher  speed on ethernet speed, but we do on wireless and tv streaming.

None of the ports worked when we plugged our ethernet cables directly into the modem.  They work with the Netgear router.

Thank you.

A few questions. When you are connecting via Ethernet directly to the modem are you unplugging the router and using that port? Normally when you change the configuration you will want to unplug the modem for about a minute and then plug it back in. The modem will otherwise be looking for the router still.

The modem should only be giving you one IP. If the router is plugged in and providing access the other ports on the modem will not give you another IP.

If you are getting full speed on wireless through your router but not when you are hardwired to the router i would have you first try another Ethernet cable.  Do you get the same slower results on multiple computers connected this way or just the one?
