TWC unwilling to help with intermittent slow download speeds..

I've been battling a slow download speed for the last couple months.

I'm in Southern Calfiornia and on Time Warner's 200mbps download / 20mbps upload plan.

5-6 days per week between 8pm and 11pm my download speeds will fluxiuate, sometimes disconnect completely. (Upload speeds are still 20+mbps during the slow periods).

Most of the time (during that time) I'm averaging download speeds of around 40mbps. After 2am or so, the download speeds go back up to 220+mbps and it stays fine all day.

I've had a technician to my house 3 times.. 2 times they came in the middle of the day when the speeds were fine and they said there was nothing wrong.

The third time the technician came to my house at 8pm and the slow down wasn't that bad (it was around 160mbps). The tehnician blamed my WiFi (Google WiFi Mesh System) as a result of the slow speeds.. Even though I explained multiple times the speed tests were ran on a computer that was directly connected via ethernet to the modem, bypassing the wifi system all together. (Even on WiFi when I'm at normal speeds i'll get 200+mbps anyways..)

I even replaced TWC's modem with my own modem (Surfboard 6141).

I'm not sure what else to do next....

Would switching to a Surfboard 6190 help (since it's 32 channels instead of the 6141's 8 channels)? Or what else can I do since TWC seems to be not willing to help?

Adding more DS channels in the modem isn't going to improve your download speed if there is any other bottleneck upstream.  5 to 10 PM is usually the time of highest network usage and the internet IXP gateways between Spectrum and the internet can become overloaded.

What gave you the idea that a 6141 would work on 200/20 service?

It's only good for 100/10 on TWC/ SpectrumWoman Embarassed

Paste the modems signal level and error log pages....You have something else wrong....

Re: TWC unwilling to help with intermittent slow download speeds..

The SB6141 is rated for 343Mbps Download / 143Mbps upload. I'm always getting 220+Mbps download and 22+Mbps upload outside of 8pm to 11pm..

Here's my Signal info, but, this is at 11:45pm, outside of the window of when I normally have problems.  I'm currently getting 191.30Mbps download and 23.19Mbps download

Re: TWC unwilling to help with intermittent slow download speeds..

Sorry but what the modem is rated for is burst speeds at lab conditions and not the real world. TWC would only provision them for 100/10.

It's not going to ever give you continuous speeds.

You need to either downgrade to 100/10 service or buy a 16x4 modem.

343 down is all 8 channel modems theoretical maximums and sorry that you saw that spec.

like cars with a 120 mph speedometer and lucky if they'll make 100 downhill in a tailwind...

Here's a link to the Spectrum Approved Devices list that tells you the maximum speed:

Re: TWC unwilling to help with intermittent slow download speeds..

You need to have Spectrum find and repair whatever is causing the T3/4 errors and resets.. Good luck.. Just lower the speed to what you get if they won't fix it.. Or go to FIOS or Uverse...
