Modem cuts in and out

Similar situation to older post:

http://forums.timewarnercable.com/t5/Connectivity/Cable-Modem-reboots-and-drops-out-often/m-p/135507

Modem will go in and out about 6-8 times a day and mostly after 3 pm.  It use to happen about once a month but has been extensibly worse over the last three months.

I figured I would try here before calling support so i know how to deal with them properly and if I can try something myself.

Here are my logs of my SB6141

Cable runs from street to outside box, connected to cable (no splitter or amp) that runs inside my basement, into splitter (CommScope SV-4G) and splits to my modem, TV, and Spectrum ARRIS Phone.

All cables (other than from street to my house) were changed two years ago by cable guy when TWC upgraded my service.

Don't know what I am looking at so any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Re: Modem cuts in and out

is there an empty port on the splitter? That's bad.

First, there should be either 2 2ways or a 3 way with a -3.5 -7 -7 db loss and the data modem on the first 2 way or the -3.5 db loss port of the 3 way.

Your levels are at about the limit of reliable operation.

Next issue, something is corroded or loose and allowing 4G cellular from I believe an AT&T 4g phone in

All connectors must be a tad more than finger tight.

Modem was reset, there should be a lot more than 3 error lines....

What model# is it?

Re: Modem cuts in and out

Thanks for the reply.   I believe I cut and pasted the log incorrectly.  Will try again.

All I have is a 4 way splitter (1 in and four outs) and all are being used.  I actually have 1 direct to TV, 1 for cable box, 1 for phone and one for modem.    I can buy and extra two way splitter to separate the cable modem prior to a three way (cable box, phone and TV) if that will help.

I looked at the cable connection in the external box and the connector (the threaded part) looks pretty rusty.   I don't know if i can get a new cable to the external box but I can try that this weekend.

I don't know if my neighbor has ATT but  I can ask.  May I ask what makes it seem like an ATT signal?  We have Verizon phones in our house.

I verified all the connectors are more than finger tight as I could barely turn them with channel locks.

The modem is an SB6141 .

Re: Modem cuts in and out

711 mHz is the AT&T handset transmit band, Verizon's up above 740 mHz

I think you're going to need a tech out, you're at the point where levels are critical and if the grounding block is corroded, it and the connectors are old, what's on the pole is probably worst.

Sounds like the outside stuff all needs to be replaced.... It's almost at the pouiint where it needs a zero loss bidirectional amplified splitter, if all the coax is good.

Any splitter changes will screw up the phone modem....

Thanks MsRaye.

I will make the call for support.  I appreciate all you help.

Re: Modem cuts in and out

If you have a set-top box for your TV, you should NOT have a second direct cable connection running to that TV.  Most older TV sets will let in excessive interference (including signals from cell phones, baby monitors, and public safety first responder radios) when the TV set is connected directly to cable.

Re: Modem cuts in and out

direct tv connections are rapidly going away as the NTSC and ClearQam channels are being turned off

Yes Karl, modern cable boxes should have a lot better isolationfrom external ingress provided all coax is dual/quad shielded with compression connectors....
