Internet Speeds

I have TWC in San Antonio and I'm on the Ultramate 200 internet plan.  However, because I'm using the SB6141, I'm limited to 100 mbps.  Speed tests usually show 90-95 down and 15-20 up.  You'd think I'd have blazing internet speed, but that's not the case.  These advertised speeds are always said with 'up to xxxxxx'.  Another point to be made.  The advertised internet speed is not based on the speed from your location to some web site, it's only between your location and the first node provided by the ISP.  After that you'll be slogging along with millions of others trying to access various web sites.  My advice is not to buy into the hype put out by your friendly provider, they just want to sell you a more expensive package.

Re: Internet Speeds

The problem is the Internet modem you're using. The SB6141 only supports speeds up to 100 MBPS. There is a way to fix this, depending on weither you lease your modem from TWC or have purchased your own.

Re: Internet Speeds

Of course they always want to sell you the most expensive package; who doesn't?

Why are you on a 200 plan when your modem isn't even capable of it?  It's not only "the most expensive", it's not even something you're using!  Stop it!

Frequently, the distant end will limit your throughput to their server, depending on demand on it.  After a certain point, what is the difference?  Do you need more than 8 people to stream 4K UHD simultaneously?  Because that is what it would take to use your 200Mb download...

I'm on 50/5 and it is wonderfully glorious...wife & I can stream simultaneously whilst downloading and browsing and it doesn't tap out at all.

When you spend your money, always ask, "What is the value added to me?  Will I use this?  Will future-self be irked that I bought this?" et. al.

Re: Internet Speeds

The 200 mbps was an automatic upgrade in anticipation of the Maxx program.  I already was using the SB6141 when I had 50/5.  TWC bumped me up to the 200 level but the SB6141 would only handle 100.

Re: Internet Speeds

Currently, there is a $10.00 lease fee.  That why I bought my modem in the first place.

Re: Internet Speeds

copy and paste the modems signal level and error log pages... Don't reset the modem.

Interesting that it's got a 100/20 provision...

Re: Internet Speeds

Here's the log for today.  I started the system about 8 AM San Antonio time.

The signal levels are all near the same as when the last TWC tech was here making some minor changes to the system.  He indicated my numbers were excellent.  The signal levels page was more than one screen wide so it's difficult to get one file out of it.  I check the levels about once each  day and they don't vary very much.

Re: Internet Speeds

error log indicates problems, probably upstream causing the T3 errors.

Copy and paste the signal level page, don't reset it

Do you own this modem and what HW version is it?

 V 7 or v8?

here's what's in a V7:

Model Name: SB6141
Vendor Name: Motorola
Firmware Name: SB_KOMODO-1.0.6.14-SCM01-NOSH
Boot Version: PSPU-Boot(25CLK) 1.0.12.18m3
Hardware Version: 7.0
Serial Number: 0001
Firmware Build Time: Mar 6 2014 15:23:55

Re: Internet Speeds

I would set it back to 50/5 to get a correct, compatible provision and to not waste money and then monitor the modem's signals and logs.

Re: Internet Speeds

I've already checked with TWC about a lower cost by reducing the internet speed, but with the plan I'm on, they say it would actually cost more by changing the plan at this stage.  When I renew, i'll be switched over to Spectrum, so we'll see how it goes at that time.
