If you have a -3.5  -7  -7 dB   3 way splitter, put the modem on the -3.5 port if the splitter isn't marked it's a -5 -5 -5 dB one and all ports are equal

 

Snug all ports with a 7/16 wrench, a tad more than finger tight.

What I have is one splitter that's a two-way splitter, and one three-way splitter. 

The two-way is labeled Time Warner and  is a -3.5 -3.5 out.  It takes the drop coming from the street, one cable out is the High Speed Data cable that goes directly to the inside wall connector dedicated to my Internet modem. 

The second cable out of the two-way splitter goes to the three-way -3.5 -7 -7 splitter, which has three cables out, to the two TVs and one that is not connected to anything (used to be a third TV).

This was set up by techs in 2008, who said it was the best way for the modem to get the best speed.

 

EDIT:  Forgot to answer....yes, they were all checked visually and with a meter by the tech Monday, and tightened with a wrench.

I'd put a terminator on the empty port or replace the 3 way with a 2 way splitter.

 Make sure all the connectors on your devices are tight, there's ingress getting in somewhere

Modems in the right place.

As soon as I get hold of a terminator, I'll do that..... probably remove the empty cable and terminate on the splitter itself. 

Just for an update, there was another "partial fallback or two last night, and now I only have 6 downstream channels.

He doesn't have a clue either, all I can tell you is that something is loose or creating/ picking up interference... It could also be somewhere on a couple miles of street cables

But you have to start at the modem and other in house devices

OK, I disconnected the unused TV cable from the 3-way splitter for TVs, in the TWC box on my house, and terminated it with a 75-ohm GE resistor cap, disconnected the modem and router for 5 minutes, and now have 8 consecutive channels again.  Now to wait and see if that helps the issue.....

....and 9 hours after adding the terminator cap to the splitter and rebooting the modem and router, just now at 7pm, I've lost downstream channel 4 and it's been replaced with channel 14.

There is no new entry in the modem logs since adding the terminator this morning.
